Business License Checklist

Work through this in order. Check each box as you go. Don't skip steps.

1

Choose your business structure

Will you operate as a sole proprietor (just yourself, no paperwork) or form an LLC or corporation? If you're not sure, start as a sole proprietor โ€” you can always upgrade later.

2

Register your business name (DBA)

If you're using a name other than your own legal name, you need to register it. Check with your county clerk's office.

3

Get an EIN (if needed)

Go to IRS.gov โ†’ search "EIN application." It's free and takes 5 minutes. Many cities require it to apply for a business license.

4

Apply for your local business license

Search "[your city] business license" โ€” find the official .gov website. Apply there. This is the main license most people need.

5

Check your state requirements

Most states don't have a general statewide business license โ€” but some do (Nevada, Washington, Tennessee). Check the state guide for your state.

6

Get a seller's permit (if you sell products)

If you sell physical products, register with your state's department of revenue to collect sales tax. This is separate from your business license.

7

Check for industry-specific licenses

Restaurants need health permits. Contractors need contractor licenses. Childcare needs additional state licensing. Look up what your specific industry requires.

8

Set a renewal reminder

Almost all licenses renew annually. Set a calendar reminder NOW for 11 months from today. A missed renewal = a fine.

You're ready!

Once you've done all of these, you're legally operating. Keep your license documents in a folder (physical and digital) and check them each year at renewal time.
